PVC Patches: Why They Last Longer Than Embroidered Patches (2026 Guide)

Quick answer: PVC patches are soft, moulded patches made from flexible polyvinyl chloride instead of thread. They are waterproof, do not fray, keep their colour through many washes and can show raised 3D detail. That makes them the best choice for tactical gear, workwear, outdoor kit and morale patches that need to last.

Key takeaways

  • PVC patches are moulded, not stitched, so there are no threads to snag or fray.
  • They are waterproof and wipe clean, which suits outdoor, tactical and work use.
  • Embroidered patches give a classic textured look; PVC gives a modern, raised, rubbery look.
  • You can choose from 7 PVC types, 9 backings, 39 shapes and sizes from 2 to 8 inches.
  • For gear that is washed often, sew on or Velcro backings hold best.

What is a PVC patch?

A PVC patch is a flexible patch made from soft polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that is poured into a custom mould and cured with heat. It feels similar to a soft rubber keyring: smooth, slightly raised and very tough. People often call them rubber patches, and the two terms are used for almost the same product.

How PVC patches are made

We make our patches in our own workshop, and every PVC order follows the same basic steps:

  1. Artwork check: we review your design and adjust any lines that are too thin to mould cleanly.
  2. Mould making: a custom mould is cut to the shape and raised levels of your design.
  3. Colour filling: liquid PVC is added one colour at a time, so each colour sits in its own section with a clean edge.
  4. Curing: heat sets the PVC into a firm but flexible patch.
  5. Backing and finishing: the backing you chose, such as Velcro or plain, is added and every patch is checked before packing.

If you want a traditional stitched look, our custom embroidered patches are a great fit. If you need toughness, PVC is the better pick.

Why PVC patches last longer

  • Waterproof: PVC does not soak up water, so it will not swell, shrink or go limp when wet.
  • Easy to clean: mud and dirt wipe straight off with a damp cloth.
  • No fraying: there are no stitches to pull loose, so the edges stay neat.
  • Colour that holds: colour is part of the material itself, so it stays bright through washing and outdoor use.
  • Flexible: the patch bends with the fabric instead of cracking.

Where PVC patches work best

  • Tactical and outdoor gear: backpacks, plate carriers, airsoft kit and hiking packs.
  • Workwear and uniforms: high visibility jackets, overalls and staff uniforms that are washed often.
  • Morale patches: fun team designs on hook and loop backing that swap in seconds.
  • Hats and caps: clean, modern branding on the front of a cap.
  • Bags and accessories: keyrings, shoe charms and bag tags.
  • Brand merchandise: a premium look for clothing labels and event giveaways.

PVC patch styles you can choose

On our custom PVC patches page you can pick from seven PVC types:

  • Embossed PVC: raised areas give your design depth you can feel.
  • Printed PVC: fine detail and colour gradients printed onto the surface.
  • Embossed and printed: raised shapes with printed detail on top.
  • Glow in the dark: for night time visibility and fun designs.
  • Gold glitter and silver glitter: a sparkly finish that stands out.
  • Photochromic PVC: changes colour in sunlight.

You can also add a debossed outline around the edge for extra definition. For a clear look, see our transparent PVC patches, and for full sparkle there are glitter PVC patches.

Choosing a backing

The backing decides how the patch attaches. We offer nine options for PVC patches:

  • Plain backing: sew it on for the strongest, most permanent hold.
  • Single Velcro (hook side): sticks to loop panels on tactical gear.
  • Double Velcro (hook and loop): both sides included, so you can fit it to any item.
  • Iron on backing: quick to apply at home.
  • Adhesive backing: peel and stick for smooth, hard surfaces.
  • Magnetic, safety pin, key chain and shoe charm: for items you want to move or hang.

Our tip: for anything that gets washed a lot or takes hard wear, choose sewing or Velcro. They hold best over time.

Sizes and shapes

PVC patches can be made from 2 to 8 inches wide and tall. Pick a custom shape cut to your design or choose from 39 ready shapes, including circles, shields, ovals and rectangles.

SizeBest for
2 to 3 inchesCaps, chest logos and keyrings
3 to 4 inchesMorale patches, sleeves and bags
5 inches and upBack panels and large jacket designs

Keep small text and very thin lines to a minimum on small patches. Bold shapes and clear lettering always mould best.

How to look after a PVC patch

  • Wipe it clean with warm water and a little mild soap.
  • Wash the garment inside out on a cool cycle.
  • Avoid direct high heat, such as ironing over the face of the patch.
  • Keep it away from strong solvents, which can dull the surface.

Frequently asked questions

Are PVC patches waterproof?

Yes. PVC does not absorb water, so PVC patches stay the same shape and colour when wet. That makes them ideal for outdoor gear and workwear.

What is the difference between PVC and rubber patches?

They are very similar and the names are often used for the same product. Both are soft, moulded and flexible. Our rubber patches page has more detail.

Are PVC patches better than embroidered patches?

PVC is better for durability, water resistance and raised 3D detail. Embroidered patches are better for a classic stitched look and soft texture. Choose based on where the patch will be used.

Can you iron on a PVC patch?

Iron on backing is available, but heat must not touch the face of the patch. For items that are washed often, sewing or Velcro gives a longer lasting hold.

Can PVC patches show fine detail?

Moulded PVC handles clean shapes and raised detail very well. For photo style images or colour gradients, choose printed PVC.

Are PVC patches more expensive than embroidered patches?

PVC needs a custom mould, so it often costs a little more per piece at small quantities. The price per patch drops as your quantity goes up. Enter your size and quantity on the product page to see your exact price.
